Social Networks and the Formation and Maintenance of River Otter Groups

چکیده
Male social congregations (sensu Parish et al. 1997) outside of the breeding season have been documented in ungulates, whales, seals, primates, and carnivores (Ruckstuhl & Neuhaus 2000; Begg 2001; Blundell et al. 2002a,b). Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain why males form social congregations or coalitions. These include increased mating success, territorial defense, predator detection and avoidance, and cooperative foraging. For example, in elk (Cervus elaphus) and bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), male bachelor-groups are thought to facilitate increased predator detection and avoidance, and decreased competition with females for forage throughout the year except during the rut (Geist & Petocz 1977; Berger 1978; Lawson & Johnson 1982; Peek 1982). Red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) form male coalitions in order to increase mating success and compete for reproductive females (Pope 1990). Male lions (Panthera leo) form coalitions in order to compete jointly for opportunities to join Correspondence Merav Ben-David, Department of Zoology and Physiology (3166), 1000 E. EXTRACTION TECHNIQUE AND MICROSATELLITE PRIMERS ON GENOTYPING SUCCESS AND ERROR RATES OF RIVER OTTER (LONTRA CANADENSIS) FAECAL DNA by
My thesis contains two chapters that have been prepared as manuscripts for publication. The first chapter, " The effects of diet, extraction technique and microsatellite primers on genotyping success and error rates of river otter (Lontra canadensis) faecal DNA " comprises the main effort of my work as a Master of Sciences student and will be submitted to Molecular Ecology. The second chapter, ...
متن کاملRelationship Between the Early Maladaptive Schema and Social Networks Addiction Among Semnan University of Medical Sciences Students
Introduction: Early maladaptive schemas are self-destructive emotional and cognitive patterns that have been formed at the beginning of development and they are repeated in the life; and since early maladaptive schemas can be the most predictive of addiction and social networking addiction is also considered as an injury or complication; the aim of this study was to determine the relationship b...
متن کاملRiver Otter Monitoring by Citizen Science Volunteers in Northern California: Social Groups and Litter Size
Opportunistic observations of Nearctic River Otter (Lontra canadensis) were collected by volunteer observers in Humboldt and Del Norte counties to describe group and litter size patterns. In the first 5 y, 709 records were sent by email, mail, or an online form. River Otter pups were characterized relative to adult body size. Group sizes, ranging from 1 to 9 otters, were larger in summer and sm...
متن کاملTerritoriality of Giant Otter Groups in an Area with Seasonal Flooding
Territoriality carries costs and benefits, which are commonly affected by the spatial and temporal abundance and predictability of food, and by intruder pressure. Giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) live in groups that defend territories along river channels during the dry season using chemical signals, loud vocalizations and agonistic encounters. However, little is known about the territoria...
متن کاملThe History and Current Status of Otter Research within Canada Based on Peer Reviewed Journal Articles
In Canada, there are two species of otters, the river otter (Lontra canadensis) and the sea otter (Enhydra lutris). The river otter is considered to be plentiful and ranges throughout a large part of Canada. On the other hand, the sea otter is classified as of Special Concern and only small translocated colonies are found along the coastline of Vancouver Island and British Columbia. The scienti...
